RUPERT – Joan Ann De Filippis, an 80-year-old resident of Rupert, Idaho, passed away July 30, 2017, at Rosetta Assisted Living in Burley, Idaho. She will be missed by many.

Joan was born April 30, 1937, in Wendell, Idaho, to James and Jennette Gunnell Chandler. She was their last child and joined four brothers and three sisters. Joan was raised in Wendell and graduated from Wendell High School; she then moved to Idaho Falls to attend beauty college. It was here that a handsome young man, Earl De Filippis, swept her off her feet. Joan and Earl were married Aug. 3, 1956, in Idaho Falls, Idaho; they were later sealed June 12, 1970, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.

Early in their marriage, they moved to California and lived in the Sacramento area. It was here that two sons, Bret and Tony, and additionally, a daughter, Luana, completed their family. In 1966, Joan and Earl brought their family back to Burley, and then purchased a home in Rupert where Joan resided until she began living at Rosetta in 2014.

Joan began working for the Cassia County School District in 1969 in the lunch program and retired in 1999 with 30 years of service. She enjoyed her co-workers and providing meals for the children.

She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings. She loved her church family and the many activities she was able to participate in.
Joan enjoyed visiting with others - she never knew a stranger. She enjoyed gardening in her spare time, along with reading. Family vacations and family reunions were a favorite, along with being able to take trips with Earl.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; siblings; and her husband, Earl.

She is survived by two sons, Bret De Filippis of Heyburn, and Tony De Filippis and daughter-in -law, Betty, of Rupert; and her daughter, Luana and son-in-law, Kirt Sloan of Twin Falls. Joan was a wonderful grandma to 13 grandchildren and great-grandma to 12.

The family extends their appreciation to the following: Rosetta Assisted Living and the caring staff who treated Joan with grace and dignity; to Pam with Encompass Home Health and Hospice who provided wonderful care to Joan in her final days; and to the many friends and family who visited her.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Rupert 3rd Ward, 526 South F St., in Rupert, with Bishop Thomas R. Haynes officiating. Burial will be in Paul Cemetery.
