BURLEY - Dean LeRoy “Buck” Smith, died peacefully at home, surrounded by his wife, daughters, granddaughter, grandsons, nephew, and sister-in- law, on Thursday, June 12, 2014.

Dean was born in Jerome, Idaho, to George Lawrence and Mabel Ziloma Exeter Smith. He was the youngest of six children, and is survived by one brother, Kenny of Caldwell, Idaho, and a sister, Lorna of Bremerton, Wash. Dean graduated from Jerome High School in 1950, and immediately after joined the United States Navy. He served four years aboard the USS Oberon during the Korean Conflict and earned four battle stars. He told the naval recruiting officer that he wanted to see the world and that he did. After his discharge, he moved to Dayton, Ohio, where he met his wife, Bette Arnett. They were married in Dayton in April 1955. Five years later, they moved to Burley, Idaho, where they raised three daughters. Dean worked for Mountain Bell/U.S. West for 38 years.

Dean's passions were his family, hunting, and fishing in Southern Idaho. He was an avid trap shooter, true outdoorsman, and great storyteller.

He is survived by his wife, Bette; daughters, Dena Ferlic (Bob), Sheri Smith, and Cathy Smith; grandchildren, Patrick Burns (Selena), Andy Burns (Kellie), Melissa Burns, and Zachary Ferlic; and four great-granddaughters.

He never missed a school event, or an athletic event for his children, grandchildren, or great- grandchildren. He was always there supporting them and cheering them on.

Dean was a patient, kind, and wise man, who touched and influenced many lives. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family. We were blessed to have him for 82 years.

Per his request, a private memorial service will be held in the South Hills where the family will celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a favorite charity.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Rasmussen Funeral Home of Burley.
