He married Karen Elizabeth Wahlstrom on April 29, 1963, in the St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church. Together, they had three children, Shauna, Darrin, and Deonna.

Gary worked as an insurance agent for 45 years where he owned and operated the Gary F. Johnson Insurance Company. The community will fondly remember him as the local Farmers Insurance agent. He dedicated his professional career to his devoted clients and loved being able to serve them.

He was a member of St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church and was active in the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and working around his home. He especially enjoyed yard work. However, most important to Gary was his family. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, and simply enjoyed every minute spent in activities with them.
