BURLEY - Russell Dile Monson, 41, of Burley, died Tuesday, June 2, 2015, surrounded by his family, at Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello.
He was born April 25, 1974, in Boise, Idaho, the son of Dile Jary and Lynda Louise Bullock Monson. He was a busy and curious little boy, who always had a big smile. As he grew, he turned that energy into Scouting, having earned his Eagle Scout at age 14. He also excelled in school at an early age. He worked hard and he played hard, and he had a great love for outdoor activities.
Russell was very intelligent and had a lifelong fascination with computers. During his high school years he was involved with the school newspaper and received numerous academic honors, such as becoming a National Merit Scholar and Valedictorian of his graduating class with three full-ride scholarship offers to different colleges.
Before he had the opportunity to attend college, he suffered an unusual brain disorder and spent many months in the hospital. His courage and determination helped him through many challenges and set-backs and he was an inspiration to many of the hospital workers who witnessed this period of his life. Throughout this next chapter in his life, he continued to be courageous and was determined to do whatever he could to serve others. From his electric wheelchair and his mini-Intensive Care Unit setup at home, he made cards and banners, sent many e-mails, and participated in family and church activities. His mother learned all of his health needs and cared for him in their loving home. Family was very important to Russ and he was loved dearly by them.
His example of courage and faith has blessed many lives. He will be greatly missed, but we are grateful that he is freed from a broken body and has now moved on to the next chapter of eternity.
Russell is survived by his parents; brother, David (Mary) Monson; sisters, Jarilyn (Troy) Cooley, Kimberly Monson, and Wendee Monson; seven nieces and two nephews; grandmother, Alene Bullock; and many extended family members.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 8, at the Burley LDS Stake Center, 2050 Normal Ave., in Burley, with Bishop Mark A. Dowdle officiating.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, at the Morris Hill Cemetery, 317 N. Latah St., in Boise.
