MALTA – Marlyn Kaye “Katie” Smith Severe, 62, of Malta, died Friday, July 31, 2015, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Katie was born on Sept. 28, 1952, in Mountain Home, Ark., the daughter of Hugh B. and Oleta LuFay (Mullen) Smith. She was raised in Heyburn and lived in the Mini-Cassia area for the majority of her life, with the exception of a short period of time when she lived in Florida. In 2011, she returned to Idaho to be closer to her sisters.
She married Jack Severe on Aug. 1, 1969. Together, they had two children. They later divorced. She then married Gary Gaskill on May 17, 1980, and they also divorced.
Katie enjoyed crocheting and knitting. She loved the outdoors and especially liked going to the beach and swimming. However, her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends. She loved life and was always the life of any gathering.
She is survived by her children, Stephanie Hale (Ron) and Bobby Severe (Tesi); her stepchildren, Nicole Gaskill and Jay Gaskill; a grandson, Trent Gaskill (whom she raised as her son) and 17 additional grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her sisters, Loretta Osterhout (Kerry), Glenda Dean, Mary Johnson (Steve), and Beleta Morrison (Alex); and many nieces and nephews who simply adored her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Burdette Smith; a sister-in-law, Juanita Smith; two brothers-in-law, David Garner and Martin Dean; one niece; and four nephews.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., in Burley, where friends and family may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday and from 1 until 1:45 p.m. Saturday prior to the funeral. Burial will be in Gem Memorial Gardens.
The family suggests memorials be directed to the family or to the M.S. Society.
