Marvin Doran SmithRUPERT – Marvin Doran Smith, an 86-year-old resident of Rupert, died at his home April 9, 2016, after a short battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family.
Marvin was born October 22, 1929, to Marion and Ruby Smith, in Shelley, Idaho. He attended school in Shelley, where he grew up. He joined the United States Air Force in 1947, and served his country for three years.
Marvin married the love of his life, Carol Smith, August 25, 1951. Their marriage was solemnized August 24, 1962, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Marvin was proud of the fact that they were married more than 64 years, and excited about working towards 65.
Throughout Marvin’s working career, he began working at a service station in his younger years; as his family grew he moved to the Lemhi area, where he fulfilled his love of farming, working for several ranchers. In 1966, he moved with his family to Rupert, where he found work with Dickson Oil. After 44 years, he retired from his working career in 2010, having touched many lives along the way. Children of his customers often share memories of him delivering oil to their home, always mentioning how kind he was to them.
Marvin loved fishing, hunting and gardening with his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren, passing that love of these hobbies onto each one of them. He was a teacher; he spent many hours teaching his children how to plant and care for a successful garden.
Marvin was a member of the LDS church, having served in many capacities, his favorite being home teaching.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Smith; eight children, comprised of six daughters, Debbie Dorius, Roxanne Dimond, Vicki (Charley) Cole, Karleen (Ronald) Straley, Susan Draper and Cindy Turner; and two sons, James (Sherri) Smith and Kip Smith; a special family friend, Tawnia Hash Bryant; 30 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to extend thanks to the hospice care providers for the brief time they cared for him and the VA hospital nurses and doctors in Twin Falls and Boise.
