Jack R. Holland Jr.
BURLEY - Jack Ross Holland Jr., an 80-year-old resident of Burley, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, June 25, 2016.
Jack was born in Pocatello, Idaho, to Jack Ross and Caroline South Holland on Aug. 1, 1935. He moved with his family to Twin Falls and then Burley when he was 15, attending Burley Junior and Senior High Schools. It was in junior high that he met the love of his life, Julia Ann Haag. She was his one and only love and immediately earned the nickname “Swede” which she was known by from then on. He graduated high school in 1953. That fall, he entered pharmacy school at Idaho State University while Julia moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, to work. One lonely winter apart was all they could take, so they married on July 1, 1954, in Burley.
After graduating from college, Jack and Julia moved to Bend, Ore., where he obtained his first job as a pharmacist. While in Bend, they adopted their first son, Jeff. After several years, they longed to return to Idaho to be closer to family. They settled in Buhl where he worked for Sav-Mor Drug and had the opportunity to adopt their first daughter, Jodi. Several years passed and Jack had the opportunity to partner with Bill Toolson and Bill Matthews in purchasing the Burley Rexall Drug store in downtown Burley. Soon after, they were able to adopt a second son, Jon, and completed their family with the adoption of their fourth child, a little girl named Jana Jean. The partnership then purchased Sav-Mor Drug in the Overland Shopping Center. Here, Jack and Julia worked side-by-side for 25 years building a thriving business and making many wonderful friends and loyal customers.
Jack loved Burley and was an active member of the LDS Church and was always faithful in his callings. He served in many leadership capacities including bishop of the Burley 2nd Ward. Above all else, Jack was an amazing husband and father. He and Julia took their young family to the Salt Lake LDS Temple where they became an eternal family. They truly enjoyed each other and their family. After retirement, Jack and Julia were able to serve a full-time mission for the Church in the New York New York City North Mission.
In June 2012, Julia passed away from diabetes and the light in Jack’s eyes went out. He nursed her at home for more than two years, rendering special and loving care to her. He continued his church service as an officiator in the Twin Falls Temple. He truly loved his temple service and only retired when failing health forced him to be released.
In addition to his dear wife, Julia, he was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Jill Fackrell.
Jack is survived by his children, Jeff and Lori Holland of Sandy, Utah, Jodi Holland of Pocatello, Jon and Sarah Holland of Draper, Utah, and Jana Mueller of Fair Oaks, Calif.; his grandchildren, Julian, William, Kyle, Abby, and Dillon (who is currently serving in the United States Marine Corps); two brothers, Lynn and Kathy Holland of Brentwood, Calif., and Russ and Sally Holland of Rupert; a sister-in-law, Carleen Heidel of Nampa; and many nieces and nephews.
At the end of the day, many great things can and should be said about Jack. However, the best way to describe him would be to simply say that he was a kind and good man.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 1, at the Burley 2nd and 4th Ward LDS Church, 515 E. 16th St., in Burley, with Bishop Walter M. Graham officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, June 30, at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., in Burley, and from 10 until 10:45 a.m. Friday at the church.
