Harvey Giles Cluff

MALTA, IDAHO – Harvey Giles Cluff, 65, of Elko, Nevada passed away from complications of cancer at his daughter’s home in Malta, Idaho on July 27, 2016.

Our dear father and brother showed courage and strength throughout the trials of life. These traits were inherited from his parents and grandparents. The Cluff and Moyle families are descendants of prominent pioneers. Harvey was born August 9, 1950, in Heber, Utah, to Wendell Moyle Cluff and Vera Giles, the fourth of seven children. He attended school in Midway, Utah until moving to Dillon, Montana in 1958. The family later moved to Lima, Montana where they owned and worked a ranch. Harvey graduated from Lima High School in 1968, and then attended Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho for one year. He served an honorable mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Austin, Texas from 1970-1972. Upon returning home, he met and married Dianne Kay Wolfe in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on November 14, 1973. Eight children joined their family: Angela Marie, Wendee Larie, Robert Jay, Cheree’ Nichole, John Wendell, Ethan Quinn, Jan, and Shannon Kay. Dianne and Harvey were divorced in February 1997. The family has never really recovered from the loss of Cheree’ and Jan in a tragic accident in 2009.

Harvey was always up for a good adventure. He worked a variety of jobs throughout his life, but being a true cowboy, he loved the outdoors and beauties of the Montana sky. Whether it was driving a tractor or riding a horse, one could always find him on a mountain or in a field. In 2005, Harvey moved to Elko, Nevada to work for Newmont Mining. He enjoyed working there and made many new friends. But, his true passion was Montana, and he was looking forward to spending time there upon his retirement in August.

A quiet man, Harvey never complained or said a negative word about anyone. He had a soft demeanor and a good heart. When he was mad, he would give us the silent treatment—a punishment much worse than a spanking.

Family was so important to Harvey. He traveled many miles to visit his children, grandchildren, and his siblings. He especially loved the “sibling trips” and reunions with his parents; the Alaskan Cruise was a highlight. Another favorite trip was with Wendee and Jason’s family and Shannon to Hawaii. He was so excited to go to the Cluff Reunion in June and was extremely disappointed when he became too ill to go. True to his heritage, he continued to persevere. In his last days, he was surrounded by his siblings and his children.

Harvey is survived by his children: Angie (Thomas) Perry, Fairborn,Ohio; Wendee (Jason) Warr, Malta, Idaho; Robert Cluff, Billings, Montana; John Cluff, Elko, Nevada; Ethan Cluff, Mountain Home, Idaho; and Shannon Cluff, Twin Falls, Idaho. He is also survived by his siblings: Charlotte (Jim) Given, Anaconda, Montana; Marilyn (Clyde) Biggs, Orem, Utah; Sharon (Darwin) Johnson, Peoria, Arizona; Larry (Denise) Cluff, Saratoga Springs, Utah; Suzie (Randy) Shinkle, Wright, Wyoming. Harvey has 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Kathleen Cluff, and his daughters, Cheree’ and Jan Cluff.

The funeral will be held at 12 noon Tuesday, August 2, at the LDS church located at 250 E. 200 S., in Midway, Utah. Burial will follow in the Midway Cemetery.

Viewing will be held from 11 until 11:45 a.m. preceding the service at the church.
