He served in the United States Army during the Korean War in the intelligence division and was stationed in Germany. He married Shirley Darlene Hunter on Feb. 21, 1953, in Paso Robles, California. They moved to Idaho in 1956, after drawing a farm on the Northside Pumping District. They sold the farm in 1963, and Don then worked at the Amalgamated Sugar Company until his retirement.
