LaWayne ‘Shorty’ Mann
BURLEY - LaWayne “Shorty” Mann was born Aug. 17, 1926, in Bountiful, Utah. He was the youngest of 11 children born to Anson L. and Eva Mann. He passed away Monday, Sept. 19, 2016, of natural causes, in Twin Falls, Idaho.
Shorty grew up on his father’s farm in Rupert, learning the virtues of hard work from an early age. He graduated from Rupert High School in 1944, and joined the United States Navy in August of that year. He served honorably in the Pacific Theater until the end of World War II.
He married Mary Lou Bates in 1947. Four sons were born from this union, Kelly, Larry, Jim, and Bill. They were later divorced. In 1969, Shorty married Kathryn Pinson. He raised her two children, Bob and Tracy. Kathryn passed away Dec. 18, 1987. On Aug. 3, 1990, he married Dona Holden Scott. Together, they were active in the Burley Elks for many years. However, their involvement was curtailed due to his declining health. Dona was his partner until his passing; traveling and enjoying life together, and being his care giver until the end.
Shorty was hard working and independent. In 1956, he purchased Burley Radiator Works and created the go-to radiator repair business for farming and automotive businesses in the Mini-Cassia area. This well-established business remains a viable part of our community to this day.
He is survived by his wife, Dona; sons, Kelly (Lyla) Mann, Larry Mann, Jim England, Bill Mann; step-son, Bob (Laura) Pinson; step-daughters, Tracy (Les) Hastings, and Michelle (Bill) Gilbert; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his second wife, Kathryn; his parents; and all of his siblings,
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at Gem Memorial Gardens, 2435 Overland Ave., in Burley. Military honors will be performed by the Mini-Cassia Veterans Organization.
The family will receive friends from 1 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the graveside service at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., in Burley.
