BURLEY – Galan Melvin Rogers, 68, passed away peacefully Sunday, Nov. 27, 2016, at his home after his two-year battle with cancer.
He was born on Oct. 6, 1948, and was the eldest of three sons of Melvin and Ellen Bond Rogers. He grew up in Harrisville, Utah on the family-owned poultry farm. Galan attended Weber High School where he met his sweetheart, Lorraine Shaw. They were married and sealed in the Logan Utah LDS Temple on July 30, 1970. He and Lorraine are the loving parents of four appreciative children: Teresa (Brett) Boyack, MaryAnn (Steven) Reed, Brad (Andrea) Rogers, and Brenda (Ephraim) Everett. They have 16 grandchildren, whom they absolutely treasure.
In 1971, Galan graduated from Weber State College with a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering Technology. He then enlisted in the US Air Force and served four-and-a-half years, achieving the rank of Captain as a Navigator Bombardier of B-52s. After his honorable discharge, he attended BYU and earned his master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Galan began his engineering career at INEL for a brief time prior to his 34-year career at the Amalgamated Sugar Company. He retired in 2015 as the Engineering Manager and Architect of the Mini-Cassia Expansion Project.
He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he dedicated his life to service. He served in many ward and stake callings and for two years in the Twin Falls Idaho LDS Temple. He and Lorraine recently completed an LDS service mission for the Pathway Program.
Galan enjoyed bowling, golfing, building model airplanes, running model trains, designing architecture, building Lego structures, and creating pen-and-ink or watercolor artwork. He will be remembered for his beautiful gingerbread houses, involvement in the Boy Scouts of America, his creativity in building and designing, his patriotism, and his community service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Ellen Rogers; his parents-in-law, Woodrow and Bernice Shaw; a brother-in-law, Douglas Shaw; and a nephew, Neil Stephens.
Galan is survived by his wife of 46 years, Lorraine; his children and their spouses; his grandchildren; his brothers, Blair (Janine) and Brian (Melanie); and three sisters-in-law, Linda (HJ) Frank, Janet (Dave) Cummings, and DeAnn (Dennis) Olson.
