HEYBURN – Carroll Fred Dayley, 84, a longtime resident of Heyburn, passed away Sunday, June 18, 2017, surrounded by his family.
Fred was born in Twin Falls, Idaho, on October 26, 1932, to Carroll Bates and Emma Nelson Dayley. He grew up in Murtaugh, Idaho, and later Pella, Idaho, graduating from Burley High School in 1950. He attended Albion State Normal School before serving in the United States Navy from July 13, 1951 to November 11, 1954, on the USS Bayfield (APA-33). He married LaDean Durfee, of Heyburn, on May 24, 1957, in the Logan Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Fred and LaDean made their first home in Alamogordo, N.M., where he worked at the White Sands Proving Grounds. They then moved to Logan, Utah, where Fred attended Utah State University. Their first two children, Carroll Dwayne and Kathy Lynne were born there in 1958 and 1960. After Fred graduated in June of 1963, the family returned to Heyburn, where Fred had accepted a job teaching science in Paul, and two additional children were born, Susan Kristine in 1963 and Kenneth Dean in 1967. Fred’s family, along with his father-in-law, Kenneth Durfee, built a home in Heyburn where they could raise their family. The Dayleys lived in this home for 55 years. The Dayley home was a favorite destination for many friends and family who loved to come and visit.
Fred and LaDean served as missionaries in the Arkansas Little Rock Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1997 to 1998, and in the Boise Idaho Temple. Fred was pleased when his granddaughter, Sister Kristine Dayley, was also called to the Arkansas Little Rock Mission, where she is currently serving.
Fred worked for the Minidoka County School District, teaching at Paul Elementary, Washington Jr. High School, East Minico Jr. High School and Minico High School as a science teacher. He coached basketball, football and track, and drove a school bus for the district. Fred was Teacher of the Year in 1991 and retired in 1995. After retiring, his passion became working at Pomerelle Mountain Ski Resort as a ski instructor.
Fred was involved in the Lions Club, served in leadership of the NEA, and served on the Heyburn City Council from 1968-1972.
Fred loved to work in his yard, creating a beautiful landscape. He enjoyed all the vegetables and fruit that he grew. He loved working on home improvement projects, woodworking, photography and teaching others about it, and serving his family.
Boy Scouts of America was a big part of Fred’s life. He was awarded the Silver Beaver. He attended National Scout Jamborees, Philmont Scout Ranch and worked summers at Camp Bradley. He was involved with Dan Beard Rangers, Order of the Arrow and Wood Badge.
Later in life, he married Vivienne Criddle who provided love, companionship and care for him as his health began to decline. They served together in the Twin Falls Idaho Temple.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, LaDean Durfee; his son, Kenneth D. Dayley; and a brother, Edward O. Dayley.
Fred is survived by Vivienne Dayley; three children and their spouses, Dwayne and Kelly Dayley of Fruitland, Idaho, Kathy and Gary Byington of West Jordan, Utah, and Susan and Larry Gee of Magna, Utah; grandchildren, Greg and Alyssa Dayley, Mark and Katie Lewis, Brodie and Ashlee Byington, Stephen and Pamela Gee, Joshua and Adrienne Gee, Kamille Dayley, Scott Dayley, Kristine Dayley and Spencer Dayley, Nathan Gee, Aaron Gee, Caleb Gee and Jarom Gee; great-grandchildren, Thad and Ira Dayley, Grace Lewis, Paisley and Baylee Byington, Alexander and Jacqueline Gee, and Madeline Gee; sisters, Emily and Duane Vickery of Emmet, Idaho, Linda and Mike Donner of Republic, Wash., and Marie and Bill Martindale of Meridian, Idaho; and brother, Carl and Maria Dayley of Burley, Idaho.
