Jack L. Warren
BURLEY – Jack Landy Warren, age 81, of Burley, passed away the morning of February 7, 2014, at St. Luke’s Magic Valley Regional Medical Center, in Twin Falls, with his family by his side.
Jack was born March 31, 1932, in Burley, Idaho, the fourth child and the first son of Albert and Merna Fewkes Warren. Jack grew up on a farm in the View area, a farm he never left except for the two years he spent in the Army. Jack attended school at View and graduated from Burley High School in 1950. He enjoyed working on the farm, playing softball, and driving friends around in his 1932 Ford Coupe with a rumble seat.
After graduation, he worked with his father on the farm. He spent the winter of 1951-52 working at Hill Air Force Base. He was then drafted into the army during the Korean War in October of 1952. He served 18 months in Japan and 6 months in California from 1952 to 1954.
In 1955, he walked into a café in Burley and saw the love of his life Iris Van Leuven. They dated for 8 months and were married December 7, 1956. They moved into an old two-story house on a farm that Jack had rented. While Jack worked on the farm, Iris worked as a legal secretary in Burley. In 1958, their family grew by one when Craig was born, Cindy followed in 1959, Lynnette in 1961, and Dan, a special gift on their anniversary in 1963.
Jack’s farming operation grew at a consistent pace as he took on more ground and eventually taking over his father’s custom combining business. He became an expert in garden bean production and the companies from the Twin Falls area would offer him their best contracts to grow their beans. He was a long time member of the Idaho Bean Growers Association and at one time served as their president.
Not only were his crops growing, his children were also growing and learning from him lessons of hard work, fair play, and honesty. As his sons grew, he expanded his custom business to include a grain combine, a hay swather, and a bale wagon.
As Jack grew older his farming took a backseat to his family and grandchildren. He loved spending time with them and especially loved teasing them. Family fishing trips and vacations produced some of his favorite memories. The grandchildren loved visiting the farm and going for tractor and 4-wheeler rides.
Jack is survived by his wife Iris; children, Craig (Jan) Warren of Smithfield, Utah, Cindy (Randy) Gillette of Paul, Lynnette (Kerry) Ball of Idaho Falls, and Dan Warren of Burley; sisters; Marva Harris, June Warr, Janet Johnson, and one brother Gary Warren; 11 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters Maxine Kelly and Sharon Kersey.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the View LDS Church, 490 E. 550 S., of Burley, with Bishop Art Thornton officiating. Military rites will be accorded by the Mini-Cassia Veterans Organization. Burial will be in the View Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., in Burley, and from 10 until 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
