Velma T. Barlow
HEYBURN - Velma Terry Barlow, our wonderful mother, was born in Buhl, Idaho, on Sept. 10, 1924, to Walter and Mabel Florence Herbst Terry. She passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Orem, Utah, on June 24, 2014. She had been ready to go for some time and this was her fondest wish. The most special part is that she passed away on her wedding anniversary. We feel that our dad came and got her and gave this to her as an anniversary gift.
Velma lived most of her childhood years on a farm in Jerome, Idaho. She married Golden Ianthius Barlow Jr. on June 24, 1946, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They lived in Carey, Idaho, for many years and then moved to Paul, Idaho, where they owned a little café called “The Frosty Spot.” Later, they built a home in Heyburn, Idaho, near the Snake River. Shortly after they moved into their new home, two of their boys, Arlin and Doug, drowned in the river while ice skating. That was a very difficult time for our mom and dad and brought great sorrow to our family. Dad passed away on Sept. 6, 2001, and his funeral was held on Mom’s birthday – the day before 911. After that, Mom spent the rest of her years living with daughters, Brenda and Marilynn, in their homes in Arizona and Utah.
Velma was a strong, faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many church positions throughout her 89 years. She loved our Savior and enjoyed serving others. She had a deep love for her family and it was with them she found the most joy. Golden and Velma loved to travel and, no matter how tight money was, they always made sure they saved enough for a yearly family vacation. Velma had a beautiful voice and loved to sing hymns and participate in the church choir. One of her favorite things to do was to listen to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. It brought her great joy and peace.
They had ten children, Rod (Janet) Barlow of American Fork, Utah, Stan (Ka) Barlow of Ithaca, N.Y., Marilynn (Parley) Hellewell of Orem, Utah, Brian (Debra) Barlow of Burley, Idaho,
Arlin (deceased), Douglas (deceased), Gay (Scott) Searle of Burley, Idaho, Andy (Lynnette) Barlow of Brigham City, Utah, Brenda (Dave) Patterson of Peoria, Ariz., and Renee Barlow of Las Vegas, Nev. She is also survived by 31 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; one sister, Vivian Lee; a brother, Leon (Launa) Terry; and a brother-in-law, Joseph Lambert.
Mom was preceded in death by her loving husband, Golden; two sons, Arlin and Douglas; one great-grandson, Jude Barlow; her parents; and two sisters, Mildred Westfall, and Elva Lambert.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 5, at the Burley LDS West Stake Center, 2420 Parke Ave., in Burley, where friends and family may call from 9:30 until 10:45 a.m. Burial will follow at the Riverside Cemetery in Heyburn.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Rasmussen Funeral Home of Burley.
