Harry Richard Longland

BURLEY - Harry Richard Longland, 89, of Burley, passed away Sunday, March 29, 2015, at Highland Estates Assisted Living in Burley.

He was born June 15, 1925, in Glendale, Calif., the son of Harry Richard Longland Sr. and Olive Paige Longland.

Harry, known by friends and family as “John,” joined the United States Navy in 1942, during WWII. He served seven and a half years, working on a variety of Navy ships. After the war, he was stationed in China, running the First Lt. Office.

Following an honorable discharge from the Navy, he made his way to the Pacific Northwest. A Jack-of-many trades, John worked many years for the Diamond International Lumber Mill as a sawyer. He married Dolores Jean Brandt on June 6, 1953, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. They settled in Coeur d’Alene, where they raised their three daughters. In June of 2013 they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

In retirement, John enjoyed time at their second home on Lake Pend Oreille, golfing and riding four-wheelers with the Burley Boys. Each morning he would meet for coffee with his buddies at Unit 54, solving many of the world’s problems.

John, while growing up with only a 9th grade education, instilled in his daughters the value of getting a college education and proudly shared with others that each of his daughters received a college degree. John was a life-long reader, and his daughters thank him for the priceless gift of reading.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores Jean Longland; daughters, Debra Ann Longland, Paula Jean Longland, and Barbara Dee (Jack) Jones; grandchildren, Heather (Spence) Mancini, Dolores Beal, Megan Longland, Jeffrey Jones; and five great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Norman Longland; sisters, Margarette Enochs, Thelma Young and Barbara Hoppell.

A special thank you to the staff of Parke View Rehabilitation and Care Center for their excellent care; Highland Estates, Dr. Campbell, Dr. Nelson, and the Intermountain Home Care and Hospice team, including Kay and Kathy; and finally, Lucy Jensen, their beloved landlord.

At Harry’s request there will be no funeral services. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Rasmussen Funeral Home of Burley.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Golden Heritage Senior Center and Intermountain Home Care and Hospice.
