Aug. 11, 1927 ~ July 15, 2012

BURLEY – Jesse Vaughn Hobson, an 84-year-old longtime resident of the Star area west of Burley, passed away on Sunday, July 15, 2012, at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Boise, of complications following heart surgery.

He was born Aug. 11, 1927 in Brigham City, Utah, to Jesse Ver Hobson and Mary Adelpha Priest Frodsham Hobson. He grew up in a large farm family that all worked hard but enjoyed many happy experiences playing together as well. Vaughn attended Brigham City schools in his earlier years. At 14 years of age his family purchased Rattlesnake Ranch seven miles west of Burley, where he worked with his father on the farm along the Snake River. Vaughn finished his formal education after graduating from Burley High School in 1946. He was active in sports where he lettered in track – taking first in the mile. Soon after graduation he was called to serve in the British Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He sailed to England on the Queen Elizabeth which was the largest passenger ship at the time. He had many wonderful experiences on his mission and served honorably from 1947-1949. After his mission he married Opal Beth Hansen in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on July 28, 1950. To this union eight children were born, Paul, Mark, Jeana, Kathy, Beverly, Barry, Heather and Jared.

He has lived and farmed in Burley for 70 years, working alongside his brothers and sisters and children. Family was important to Vaughn. He taught his children good work ethics and also made time for fun. Each winter the family enjoyed skiing at the Pomerelle Ski Resort where he and Opal were ski instructors for 15 years. He always loved supporting his children and grandchildren in their various events and spending time with them.

Vaughn was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His love for the Lord was evident in everything he did and has left a lasting impression on his friends and family. He has served in many church, state and local capacities. He served 22 years as director, secretary and president of the Cassia Farm Labor Board, as Farm Bureau director and vice president, and has also helped with many political campaigns. His service in the church has included missionary work, Explorer advisor, priest quorum advisor, Young Men president, 70’s group leader, a counselor in two different bishoprics, stake single adult leader, and Sunday school president. He helped on the stake farm for more than 50 years. He recently served a mission to the stake cannery and at the time of his passing was serving as a home teacher. He and his wife Opal were married 48 years before she passed away in February 1998. He married Audrey Belnap Patterson on July 5, 2003, in the Ogden Utah LDS Temple.

He loved contributing to charities, reading, gardening and enjoying his family and friends at the Hobson boat dock.

In addition to his first wife, Opal, he was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Jay Frodsham, Dan Frodsham, Lee Frodsham, Blanche Wilson, Cliff Hobson, Nona Bywater, and Dahris Hanks; a son-in-law, Mike Parton; and a granddaughter, Autumn Parton.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey Hobson; one sister, Mavis (Don) Wrigley; a sister-in-law, Ida Frodsham; eight children, Paul (Jolene) Hobson, Mark Hobson, Jeana (Jim) McBride, Kathy (Bill) McElhannon , Beverly (Gordon) White, Barry (Marnae) Hobson, Heather (Brad) Staker and Jared (Candace) Hobson; his stepchildren, Brett (Kimberlee) Patterson, Bart Patterson, and Brenda Schneider; 49 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 21, at the Star LDS Church, 100 S. 200 W., of Burley, with Bishop Chris Seibold officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, July 20, at Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., in Burley, and from 10 until 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be directed to the Burley Music Club or the LDS Church missionary fund.
