Vivian Walker Darrington

May 11, 1928 - Mar. 28, 2020

On Saturday, March 28, 2020, Vivian Walker Darrington completed her mission on this earth and returned to our Father in Heaven. Her mission started May 11, 1928, as the last of eight children born to John Orrin and Etta Vera Walker. Her father was a farmer and it was on this farm in Pella, Idaho that Vivian developed her love of the outdoors and horses. She attended Brigham Young University for a time after World War II where she got to shake President George Albert Smith’s hand and take religion classes from Hugh B. Brown. In December of 1951, she received a calling from President David O. McKay to serve in the Western Canadian Mission. During her mission, she was able to enjoy Sunday school lessons taught by her old BYU religion teacher, Hugh B. Brown.

Vivian’s first love was the gospel of Jesus Christ. She was grateful for the blessings she received while here on earth. She married Keith Olsen Darrington on April 24, 1958, in the Idaho Falls Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They made their life in the Elba valley where she served as Postmaster for many years. Keith and Vivian raised Registered Polled Herefords and the hay and grain they needed. It wasn’t an easy life, but she would tell you it was a good life. They were blessed with three daughters: Annalee, Laurie, and Penny. Life was good and she continued to serve her Lord in her callings in Primary, Relief Society, the church library and other ways she could find.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith; her parents, John and Etta Vera; her brothers and sisters, Winona, Fay, Owen, Murray, Gordon, and Wyman. She is survived by her sister, Maxine Wheaton; her children, Annalee and Laurie Darrington, and Penny (Daryl) Monson; and her grandchildren, Lacey and Jarod Monson.

She loved the song “My Heavenly Father Loves Me” by Clara W. McMaster and wrote another verse for it that bears her testimony:
He gave us the gospel of Jesus Christ with apostles, prophets true.
He gave us the scriptures to help guide us and return to Him again.
He gave us our families, parents, friends. I thank Him reverently
For the plan of salvation, of which I’m apart.
Yes, I know Heavenly Father loves me.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a private immediate-family graveside service will be held at Grand View Cemetery in Elba.

From Brad Darrington:
Homemade bread and raspberry jam, from the berry patch in back.

My aunt's house held many good memories for me and my siblings and cousins. The post office was a magical place to my child eyes. Aunt Vivian let me read the "Grit" newspapers--I enjoyed that very much. I remember laying on that huge rag rug in her living room, and watching an episode of "Branded" on the TV with AnnaLee and Laurie.

My baby brother Corey was laid for his funeral viewing in Keith and Vivian's living room.

Vivian and Keith were quite a pair. Both very memorable. To mention just one thing in particular: Vivian had an incredible capacity for chores--and she was so physically strong!

How wonderful to be remembered with such gratitude and admiration. I hope we all live as well as Aunt Vivian.

Love from our family to Annalee, Laurie, and Penny, from all of my clan.
From Arlene Ward:

So sorry to hear of your loss. We always had a soft spot in our hearts for her. Dad (Richard Goodfellow) remembers when she would take him to the movies about once a week. He thought of her as a sister. What sweet memories. I was actually going to try to get up there to see her this summer. I was just starting to make plans. I'm sorry I missed her. I hope Heavenly Father can bring you lots of comfort in this time of sorrow. Love, Richard and Kathryn Goodfellow and kids. Vickie, Rick, Guy, Shelly, Gwen and Shane

From Kirk Ottley:
I was deeply saddened to read that your mother had died, and I wish you comfort and solace in this time of sorrow! I have many fond memories of working and visiting with Vivian on those occasions when families did that sort of thing on a regular basis. And beyond that, your mom and dad were always like second parents to me when I was a child, throughout my teen years, and always throughout my life whenever I had the opportunity to come home. I will never forget the kindness and generosity of spirit your mother always showed me, and anyone with whom she came in contact. May you find peace and joy in your memories of the great woman that she was! Take good care of yourselves!
From Matt Darrington:
So long Aunt Vivian. I will miss your hospitality.
From Jan Sangster:
Beautiful Penny, you were clearly the correct woman for the job! She was a good woman, and I will miss her dearly. She had a good run.
From Dendra Stratton:
One of my most embarrassing moments was that my wedding reception. We had been standing in line so long and up walked this lady I knew but I couldn't place. It was Aunt Vivian I could not believe she took the time to come all the way from Idaho just to be at my wedding reception. She graciously accepted my apologies for not recognizing her immediately.
She holds a very special place in my heart. I want to send my love to all the girls and let them know that I wished I could be there and then give them all a hug. Instead I will send them my love.
From Jeanette Babbitt :
Love you. Memories never die.
