REXBURG – Kenneth Reid Young, an 85-year-old resident of Rexburg, passed away Monday, May 10, 2021, with his family by his side.

Ken was born August 10, 1936, in Burley, Idaho, to Floyd and Effie Case Young; he was the ninth of ten children. He spent his childhood in Burley and graduated from Burley High School in 1954. Following graduation, he served in the United States Air Force. He was stationed in France and was able to see the world, while serving. While in Switzerland, he met the love of his life, Johanna Elbrink, a Dutch girl. They could barely speak each others’ language when they met. They dated for a year and Ken wooed her with his story about life in the United States. They were married in Gouda, Holland, on December 27, 1957. He was honorably discharged from the military and returned with Johanna to Burley to start their new life.

Ken attended trade school in Pocatello and started work at INL as an off-hull tech. He worked at the site for 30 years.

Johanna passed away in 1974, leaving their only daughter, Kendra, with Ken. He then married Carole Hatch and moved to Rexburg and lived with Carole and her five children.

He loved fishing and, even more, he loved the cabin that he built in Island Park. It was his perfect mountain get away. Ken will be remembered for his hard-work ethic, loyalty, and his love for his grandchildren.

Ken is survived by his only daughter, Kendra Bodine (Jon); five stepchildren, Kim Hatch (Denise), Craig (Kimberly), Darren (Marilyn), Lezlee (Ben) and Stephanie (Bill); many grandchildren; and his brother, Gaylord Young.

In addition to his first wife, Johanna, he was preceded in death by his second wife, Carol; seven sisters; one brother; and a great-grandchild, Mason Rowley.

A viewing will be held from 5:30 until 7 p.m. Thursday, May 13, at Flamm Funeral Home, located at 61 North 1st East, in Rexburg.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at Rasmussen-Wilson Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., in Burley, where friends and family will be received from noon until 12:45 p.m. Interment will be at Pleasant View Cemetery in Burley, where Ken will be buried next to his first wife, Johanna. Military rites will be provided by the Mini-Cassia Veterans Group.
