James Edgar Callow

Apr. 3, 1936 - Mar. 24, 2022

Date of Service: Apr. 2, 2022

BURLEY – James Edgar Callow, an 85-year-old resident of Burley, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2022, at his home.

James was born April 3, 1936, in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, the son of David Franklin & Blanch Alma Rodda Callow. He came from a family of nine sons and one daughter. He had three daughters and one son.

After high school, James began work in his home town of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, learning to be a tinsmith. Before he had time to earn his license, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He promptly joined the Navy, as he said, to “beat the draft”. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy for 20 years. Upon retiring from the Navy, he worked for the City of Pocatello in Water Pollution Control. After retiring from that job, he drove railroad crews to and from trains in southeast Idaho.

He was a kind-hearted man who loved to work with his hands and help others. His nickname in the Navy was “Sunshine”. Some of his passions were: working on cars, fishing, hunting, hiking, walking his dogs, camping, and of course, telling sea stories.

He never met a stranger, and those of us who were fortunate enough to have known and/or loved him, will forever be grateful for the sunshine he left with us.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 2, at Rasmussen-Wilson Funeral Home, located at 1350 E. 16th St., in Burley, where family and friends will be received for visitation beginning at 10 a.m. prior to the service. Services will conclude with military rites being performed by the Mini- Cassia Veterans Group.

From Darel Ashbaker Jr.:
My memories of my grandfather are a few but all our pleasant. I remember when I was younger and he'd send some strange gifts for Christmas and today I realized they were thing's that pertained to his life at that time like a railway hat. And it's kind of funny because today I tried to do the same with the younger ones in my family and I didn't realize it until very recently. My grandfather most certainly had the Gift of Gab and always made people feel welcome. These last few years I tried to be the same way to the younger people in my family and I was trying to build a better relationship with you and Val. I know this is a sad and hard time for some of us but I know I'll keep him with me always in my heart and with warm memories. And that we shouldn't let the past dictate our Behavior today or tomorrow. One last thing I want to say thank you for your example and your life experience grandad he lived life pretty full and I can only hope to you do the same.
From Idaho State Veterans Cemetery - Blackfoot:
Rest in peace with honor and gratitude for your service.
