Donald Ray Johnson

Feb. 20, 1954 - Nov. 8, 2024

Date of Service: Nov. 14, 2024

HEYBURN – Donald Ray Johnson, a 70-year-old resident of Heyburn, passed away Friday, November 8, 2024, at his home.

Don was born February 20, 1954, in Rupert, Idaho, the oldest child born to Wayne Taylor and Shirley Ann Ennis Johnson. He received his education in Rupert and graduated from Minico High School in 1972.

At an early age he developed a strong work ethic that lasted throughout his life. He moved irrigation pipeline before school and he worked at the family’s supper club, “The Drift Inn” in Rupert. His professional career began following graduation at Amalgamated Sugar Company. He worked there his entire adult life until his retirement in 2016. He was instrumental in contributing to many improvements at the factory that spanned more than 40 years. He loved his work and it showed through complete dedication and dependability. During his working life he made many long and lasting friendships.

He had two children from a previous marriage: daughter, Megan; and son, Brody. As a single father, he became a great cook and planner. On October 14, 1990, Don married the love of his life, Kristie Marie Miller. Together, they had one son, Coltin.

Don was a talented athlete and an avid softball pitcher. This talent took him throughout the state of Idaho where he competed in countless softball games. His marriage to Kristie was a dream come true when he found his partner in sports as she, too, was an avid athlete.

Family was of the utmost love to Don. He was involved in all of the children’s activities – not only sports but all their adventures and successes in life. He was a great supporter and was willing to give advice on how to improve each child’s talents and abilities. He and Kristie traveled throughout the country to watch and enjoy the events of each of their children. This did not stop with the children but segued into the lives of their grandsons, Tommy and Connor. Grandpa A.K.A “Gramps” was with them as much as he could, they did everything they could together.

Don was ready and willing to help any family member or friend with any project that was presented to him. He was an avid reader. The knowledge he gained through his reading assisted him with his ability to fix and do anything required for the success of the projects.

His hobbies in life included playing World of Warcraft, hunting, fishing, camping and hanging out with his faithful companion – his dog, Koby.

He was always the entertainment at functions with extra personality. Don will be missed and cherished by all those individuals he touched. We, as his family, look forward to seeing him again.

He is survived by his wife, Kristie Johnson of Heyburn; children, Megan McLaurin (Bradley Cooper) and Brody Johnson, both of Centennial, Colorado, and Coltin Johnson (Josie) of Heyburn; grandsons, Thomas McLaurin and Connor McLaurin; siblings, Tammy Jafek (Keith Hayes) of Eagle, Idaho, and Rony (Nicole) Reynolds of Rupert; and his nieces, Demi (Ronnie Terry) their daughter Tove, and Kilee Jafek (Abid Omerovie) and their son, Abi.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Ray and Thelma Ennis; father-in-law, Sam Miller; mother-in-law, Joyce Miller; and brother, Jerry Johnson.

Don’s life will be celebrated from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Thursday, November 14, at Rasmussen-Wilson Funeral Home, located at 1350 E. 16th Street, in Burley, where family and friends will gather to share memories and pay tribute to a life well lived.

Don was a great friend from grade school until we moved from Rupert. We worked together from our farm jobs, the Drift Inn, and even the sugar factory. We hunted, played sports, and even got into a bit of trouble together. Don was a good man that cared about family and others, and will be missed. He will remain in our memories, and his family will be in our prayers.

Became friends with Don many years ago in World of Warcraft. Both in game and when Don and Kristie traveled to Minnesota to visit it was just such a pleasure to be around him. He even brought a huge pack of fireworks to show how they do it back home. What a truly great human being. I wouldn't know where to begin. But as a guild mate and friend I will never forget him. Kristie I am truly sorry for your loss. Many many folks have been touched by his presence. God Bless.

We are so sorry to hear of your loss of Don. We went to Jr High and High School with Don. Dennis spent time hanging out with Don, he remembers when Don took him to the Drift Inn for his first real steak. Don played softball with Dennis on the traveling softball team. Don was one of the good guys and always enjoyed running into him and catching up.

It was great to reconnect at our 50 year class reunion. I had not seen Don in 50 years. It was a pleasant conversation. R.I.P. My condolences to his family.
From Bo Isaak:
Hey Goon!! Little League baseball, halloween tomato & egg fights, softball & basketball teammates & opponents for many years. Unknowningly, we hired on at Amalgamated one day apart and retired on the same day some 43 1/2 years later. 65 years of rubbing elbows, and you seemed to "win" too often in the ball games. RIP Don, my friend. Kristie, our prayers are with you, so sad to lose him at such a young age.
From Mason:
I only knew Don through gaming, but he was a great guy who cared about his family, and is greatly missed by all who knew him.

From Trina Pittman (Ezabeth/Meera):
Kristie and family ~ I am deeply saddened by your loss and we think of you and your family often. I hope you find some comfort with the fond memories we have of Don as Closely/Truely/Mostly. He was a genuine soul who's larger than life personality transcended World of Warcraft and impacted all of us greatly in the Real World.

RIP my dear friend, legendary hunter/priest/warlock, stellar guildie, Booty Bay dancer and ultimate hospitality concierge!!! Rest easy now Close and leave the leveling to us (we won't do you justice because, let's be honest, you were the man at leveling) but we will give it all we got in your honor. You have always been a legend to us. Thank you for choosing us as your posse, we are all better for it.

From Brandi (Charlyt) Burnet:
I knew him from World of Warcraft like Jonathan did. Fabulous player, great friend, solid guildy. Wonderful whacky sense of humor. He's missed very much. We were lucky we to have him with us.
From Janet powers :
My prayers are with you. Love you
From Mike Brown:
Awesome guy, had some great conversations with him when I was going through some rough spots on my life.
From Jonathan (Fal) Melius:
To me Donald was a healer, a hunter, and a badass warlock. I knew him as Closely, in a game that brought us together in a way nothing else could. I was his guildmate in a guild he was specifically responsible for and I am glad I got the opportunity to know him and be part of his posse. He was great ally in real life and in game.
From Dawna Bailey:
Kristie, I am so sorry to hear this news. Sending love and prayers to you and your family.
