Carol Lee Martin

Dec. 26, 1941 - Apr. 8, 2026

Date of Service: May 23, 2026

BURLEY - Carol Lee (Cannell) Martin—beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, friend, and devoted animal lover—passed away peacefully in her home on April 8, 2026, at the age of 84.

Born on December 26, 1941, in Burley, Idaho, Carol was a lifelong resident of the community she loved deeply. She was the youngest of fourteen children, born to Horace and Ethel Cannell, and carried with her a strong sense of family, resilience, and connection throughout her life.

Carol was the proud owner of Carol’s Coiffures for 62 years, where she became a true icon in Burley. Stylish, creative, and ahead of her time, Carol had a gift not only for hair, but for making people feel beautiful and confident.

Her salon was more than a business—it was a gathering place filled with laughter, stories, friendship, and trust. She was a mentor, a leader, and a steady presence in the lives of so many.

Beyond her salon, Carol was deeply respected within her profession. She served on the board of the National Cosmetology Association and Hair America, and worked for many years as a state inspector, helping to uphold standards and mentor others in the industry she loved.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Nicholas James Martin, with whom she shared a life rooted in hard work, love, and deep connection.

Known for her beauty, spunky spirit, generosity, and positive outlook, Carol lived her life with quiet strength. Despite living with congestive heart failure for many years, she never complained—choosing instead to focus on others and bring light to those around her. She was a natural leader, a generous mentor, and someone who made everyone feel seen and valued.

Carol is survived by her daughter, Nickell Melo; and son-in-law, Joe Melo, of San Jose; her cherished grandchildren, Brittany Melo of Oceanside, and Nicholas Melo, a student at University of California, Santa Barbara. She is also survived by her siblings, Merlin Cannell and his wife Lin, and DeeAnn Mendenhall, along with many loving nieces and nephews.

Honoring Carol’s wishes, the family chose cremation with no formal service. Instead, she asked for a celebration of life—a gathering filled with dancing, good food, friends, laughter, and connection, just as she lived her life.

The family will be hosting a memorial celebration of life in her honor from 2 until 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, at the address of 621 South 400 West, Heyburn, Idaho 83336.

Carol’s life was a testament to dedication, kindness, and enduring love—for her family, her work, her animals, and her community. She leaves behind a legacy of connection, strength, and joy that will continue to live on in all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your local animal shelter.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Rasmussen-Wilson Funeral Home of Burley.

From Denise Dietz:
So enjoyed our many discussions about life, family and the world around us. Never did I think our last conversations were coming so soon. My husband and I traveled from Kimberly to Burley for 8 years after we moved just to have Carol cut our hair. I had gone to her salon on and off for fifty years. She thanked us each time we made the trip for staying with her. She will be missed and also know she loved her family…
From Marillyn Buck:
Carol was more then just my hairdresser, she has been a very dear friend for a long time. I never left her shop without a hug and an "I love you." She was always so easy to talk to and we laughed alot as she was cutting my hair. I am going to miss her so much but know she is at peace. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family.
